COMPANY OVERVIEW

NextFlex, America’s Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is a public-private partnership and non-profit with the mission of advancing the capabilities of U.S. manufacturing in the field of Hybrid Electronics (HE). NextFlex was designed to facilitate the development of enabling manufacturing technologies and knowledge sharing with institute members and the U.S. Government. Our work enables the next generation electronics and packaging for government and commercial applications for medical, wearable, asset monitoring, structural health monitoring, soft robotics, integrated array antennas, automotive, agricultural technology applications, among other applications.

Complementing NextFlex’s focus on developing and commercializing emerging technologies, NextFlex’s Education and Workforce Development department is creating the next-generation STEM workforce for the electronics industry. In support of our education and workforce development goals, NextFlex develops and operates a portfolio of learning programs designed to be adopted by various stakeholders (employers, higher education, non-profit, and K-12 entities) across the country with the goal of attracting and training the future advanced manufacturing workforce and upskilling and retraining the existing workforce.

POSITION SUMMARY

In this position, the Technology Projects Contracts Intern will be exposed to hybrid electronics technology projects from the perspective of contracting and project management. The intern will have the opportunity to learn the basics of government contracting and mitigating risk for the company.

 

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

  • Type: Part-Time Internship
  • Position Type: On-Site
  • Location: San Jose, CA
  • Duration: Anticipated May – August 2025 (start & end dates can be flexible based on candidate’s schedule)
  • Hours:  Anticipated hours are 20-30 hours per week (hours can be flexible based on candidate’s schedule)
  • Reports to: Manager, Strategic Programs and Legal Affairs
  • FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

  • Learn and maintain Smartsheet database.

Update and maintain:

  • Contracts/Agreements Matrix
  • NDA Dashboard Matrix
  • Projects Dashboard Matrix
  • Project Deliverables
  • Subrecipient Invoice tracking
  • Property Reports matrix
  • Patent Invention Reporting
  • Assist in organizing and managing project data within Smartsheet to streamline project tracking between various spreadsheets and dashboards within the platform.
  • Support internal projects closeout paperwork by tracking, collecting, and filing all necessary documentation.
  • Help maintain and organize contract’s physical files and digital files in NextFlex’s cloud-based filing platform.
  • Coordinate and maintain the loaned and government property control.
  • Support the completion of subrecipients paperwork related to project extension, agreement modifications, and project closeout.
  • Contribute to creation and updating contract policies and procedures manual to help improve process consistency.
  • Prepare and organize paperwork for NextFlex’s publication approval process to ensure timely submissions.
  • Support other activities as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • High School Diploma.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • College student interested in contracts or legal work.
  • Administrative, project management and financial experience is a plus.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

In person work environment, potential for some telework. On-site office work will be conducted using general office equipment, includes substantial sitting and is performed primarily in a typical indoor office setting with cubicles, offices, and conference rooms. Low to moderate noise and interruptions typical of an office setting, such as peer conversations, computers, printers, and phones.

 

WORK AUTHORIZATION / REQUIREMENTS

To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be one of the following: a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Joyce Shulman – Board Development Committee

Joyce is an innovation strategist who is passionate about creating positive social change. She is a consultant at Sonder Collective, a social impact consultancy specializing in climate, humanitarian, and global health issues.

With 15 years of experience in various sectors, Joyce brings expertise in strategic planning, research, and developing solutions. Her work is fueled by her curiosity and commitment to making a difference. Before joining Sonder Collective, she worked at digital health startups, Kaiser Permanente Innovation, Elevance Health Innovation, and  PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Services. 

Joyce has a Master of Business Administration from the California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. She strongly believes in the power of creativity and entrepreneurship, which she promotes through graduate teaching at the California College of the Arts. She also served on the board of The Crucible, an industrial arts school in West Oakland. Currently, she serves as a founding advisory board member for COVEN, which focuses on activating spaces and places for monumental art. 

Joyce lives in San Francisco with her husband. They recently completed their first host experience within a cultural exchange program and are committed to hosting each year. In her free time, she enjoys adventuring in nature and collaborative public art projects with Five Ton Crane at Seaport Studios in Richmond.
