We are currently seeking a passionate Shift Lead to join our growing team!

 

Position overview

The Shift Lead plays a key role in creating a welcoming and friendly store environment. You will help build strong customer relationships, guide and mentor team members, and assist with staff training and development. You’re committed not only to your own growth but also to the success of the cafe, your team, and the company as a whole.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding hospitality, always seeking new ways to delight our guests.
  • Make resourceful decisions and problem-solve effectively.
  • Approach every interaction with empathy and respect — both with customers and teammates.
  • Serve as a role model, setting high standards and striving for continuous improvement.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new hires, as well as updating current team members on new beverage and food offerings.
  • Provide timely, consistent feedback to foster growth in workflow, hospitality, and product quality.
  • Support company-wide sustainability initiatives through daily actions and leadership.

 

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead the team during shifts, ensuring smooth operations and upholding Abanico Coffee Roasters standards.
  • Manage floor operations, daily schedules, staff breaks, and assignments.
  • Foster a positive learning environment, encouraging curiosity and continuous development among team members.
  • Coordinate with vendors and manage supply orders as needed.
  • Ensure retail and barista stations are fully stocked and displays are well-maintained.
  • Execute quality store openings and closings, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  • Support a workplace culture that attracts, retains, and develops exceptional baristas.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for both staff and customers, addressing and correcting exclusionary behaviors.
  • Assist with quality control by preparing beverages and food to Abanico’s high standards.
  • Uphold all food safety, health, and safety regulations.
  • Immediately address and report any potentially hazardous situations to the Cafe Manager.
  • Enthusiastically contribute to the company’s growth and evolution.

Qualifications

  • California Food Safety Certification (required within 30 days post-hire).
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Familiarity with food safety and sanitation regulations.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Use of hands to reach, grip, turn and perform precision work. You’re using your hands to operate beautiful espresso machines, and operate the register (among other responsibilities).
  • As needed squat, bend, twist and reach for items below waist level or above shoulders. For example, you may have to bend down or reach up to grab cups, lids and towels..
  • Ability to lift, push/pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. For example, you’ll be handling bags of coffee beans, coffee kegs, crates of milk, tub of dishes and trash bins.
  • As needed climb ladders, stairs, ramps and uneven floor and/or surfaces. For example, climb on a step stool to change menu slacks, go up and down stairs and ramps to storage areas.
  • Ability to smell and taste. You’re tasting and smelling coffee and food, helping ensure quality control for each cup and plate.

 

Compensation

  • Salary: $22/hour + tips
  • Part time / Full Time Position

Joyce Shulman – Board Development Committee
Principal at Sonder Collective

Joyce is an innovation strategist who is passionate about creating positive social change. She is a consultant at Sonder Collective, a social impact consultancy specializing in climate, humanitarian, and global health issues.

With 15 years of experience in various sectors, Joyce brings expertise in strategic planning, research, and developing solutions. Her work is fueled by her curiosity and commitment to making a difference. Before joining Sonder Collective, she worked at digital health startups, Kaiser Permanente Innovation, Elevance Health Innovation, and  PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Services. 

Joyce has a Master of Business Administration from the California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. She strongly believes in the power of creativity and entrepreneurship, which she promotes through graduate teaching at the California College of the Arts. She also served on the board of The Crucible, an industrial arts school in West Oakland. Currently, she serves as a founding advisory board member for COVEN, which focuses on activating spaces and places for monumental art. 

Joyce lives in San Francisco with her husband. They recently completed their first host experience within a cultural exchange program and are committed to hosting each year. In her free time, she enjoys adventuring in nature and collaborative public art projects with Five Ton Crane at Seaport Studios in Richmond.
