SFMade launched Inside Manufacturing in 2013, a specialized program that combines both educational and experiential elements to expose high school students to the local manufacturing economy in San Francisco. The program is currently funded by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and Jewish Vocational Services.
The goal of Inside Manufacturing is to introduce students to the variety of products that are made and sold locally in the city, as well as showcase different careers available in the entrepreneurship and manufacturing sector. Classes of high school students participating in the program will tour multiple businesses during the academic year, hear directly from business owners about what it takes to run their operations, and participate in hands-on workshops. These elements combined provide students with a unique understanding of the manufacturing sector and their potential role in it.
Participating SFMade businesses are interested in engaging San Francisco’s youth with the local manufacturing sector, and have generously volunteered their time to speak to classes, conduct tours, and design and teach workshops.
Inside Manufacturing also aims to create new pathways for students to future employment, internships and entrepreneurship opportunities in the urban manufacturing sector and, over time, hopes to serve as a new model of partnership between the school district and local employers.
