What do you get when you bring together the City of San Jose, the Knight Foundation, SFMade and a host of local manufacturers, supporters, and partners? Manufacture San Jose, better known as MFG:SJ.
Launched in 2018 with a vision to bolster resources and visibility for the manufacturing sector in San Jose, MFG:SJ focuses on support to manufacturers in areas ranging from operational efficiency, marketing, and long-range planning to workforce development and hiring.
Encompassing 1,200 companies employing more than 50,000 residents, the manufacturing sector in San Jose felt the same dramatic impacts from the pandemic as business all across the country, and the Knight Foundation responded to the crisis with a generous $450,000 investment in MFG:SJ to help local manufacturers stay in business, recover, and maintain and create jobs.
As an important thought partner, the Knight Foundation supports communities and leading organizations such as MFG:SJ and its partnerships with local nonprofits serving communities in need. Thanks to the Foundation’s support, an active network of local community colleges, nonprofit organizations, and manufacturers like Olympus, ensure San Jose residents are prepared to step into good paying manufacturing jobs. For example, a recent job fair with partners Work2Future and Evergreen Valley Community College showcased open positions at 16 manufacturers in East San Jose and drew 200 job seekers.
