ABOUT SFMADE

Launched in 2010, SFMade is a first-of-its-kind, non-profit economic development organization that has served as a national model focused on providing industry-specific guidance, education, and resources to the manufacturing sector. We’ve built strong relationships with manufacturers across diverse industries including CPG, apparel, and advanced manufacturing.
Our strengths include our unique youth programs like FlexFactor, our extensive network of advisors and service providers, and our ability to connect manufacturers with technical assistance. In partnership with the City of San Jose, SFMade launched MFG in 2018 to drive resources, knowledge, and visibility to the city’s more than 1,200 manufacturers.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The South Bay Engagement Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting local manufacturers throughout San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, and Fremont. This position requires a versatile professional who can provide business guidance and resources to manufacturers of all sizes while developing meaningful relationships throughout the community. As the primary point of contact for South Bay manufacturers, you’ll help businesses navigate challenges, access resources, and facilitate connections with SFMade’s broader network of experts.

 

ABOUT OUR MANUFACTURERS

The South Bay is home to a diverse manufacturing ecosystem – from small artisan producers to advanced technology manufacturers. These businesses face unique challenges including space constraints, operational efficiency, and growth management. Your job is to understand these challenges and provide practical, actionable guidance.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manufacturer Support & Business Advising (40%)
    • Conduct on-site or virtual consultations with manufacturers to assess needs and provide direct business guidance
    • Connect manufacturers with specialized resources, advisors, and service providers when additional expertise is needed
    • Identify opportunities for business improvement, growth, and innovation
    • Develop trusting relationships with business owners and key staff across diverse manufacturing sectors
  • Documentation & Program Administration (25%)
    • Maintain detailed records of all manufacturer interactions in Salesforce
    • Document best practices and develop process improvements
    • Prepare regular reports on manufacturer engagements and program activities
    • Support grant reporting requirements with accurate and comprehensive documentation
  • Event Management & Programming (20%)
    • Organize and facilitate workshops, webinars, and in-person events tailored to South Bay manufacturers
    • Coordinate educational opportunities that address manufacturers’ most pressing needs
    • Create opportunities for manufacturers to connect with each other and with potential partners
    • Ensure all programming is accessible and relevant to the diverse South Bay manufacturing community
  • Community Engagement & Relationship Building (15%)
    • Represent SFMade at community events and industry gatherings
    • Build partnerships with local economic development agencies, industry associations, and educational institutions
    • Identify and engage with potential new manufacturers to expand SFMade’s impact
    • Collaborate with team members to share insights and best practices across regions
    • Act as an ambassador for local manufacturing and SFMade’s mission throughout the South Bay

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required
    • Experience running a small business OR 3+ years of experience in a generalist business role addressing varied operational challenges
    • Strong familiarity with the South Bay business ecosystem and community
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships across diverse populations
    • Problem-solving mindset with practical approach to business challenges
    • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
    • Commitment to detailed documentation and data management
    • Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM platform
    • Reliable transportation for regular manufacturer visits throughout the South Bay
  • Preferred
    • Knowledge of manufacturing operations or production environments
    • Experience providing business advising or consulting services
    • Familiarity with economic development, workforce development, or community development
    • Understanding of the unique challenges facing small manufacturers
    • Spanish language proficiency
    • Connection to the South Bay community through residence or previous work

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hybrid work arrangement combining remote work with regular visits to manufacturers (approximately 1-2 days per week in the field)
  • Regular video meetings with team members, manufacturers, and community partners
  • High volume of email communication
  • Thorough documentation requirements in Salesforce and other systems
  • Flexible schedule with occasional evening or weekend events
  • Meaningful work supporting local businesses and job creation
  • Collaborative team environment with passionate colleagues

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Compensation for this position will depend on the breadth, relevance and depth of your experience.
  • The range for this position is $75,000 to 85,000
  • SFMade covers 100% percent of your medical, dental and vision premiums.
  • We have an “unlimited” PTO policy.

Joyce Shulman – Board Development Committee
Principal at Sonder Collective

Joyce is an innovation strategist who is passionate about creating positive social change. She is a consultant at Sonder Collective, a social impact consultancy specializing in climate, humanitarian, and global health issues.

With 15 years of experience in various sectors, Joyce brings expertise in strategic planning, research, and developing solutions. Her work is fueled by her curiosity and commitment to making a difference. Before joining Sonder Collective, she worked at digital health startups, Kaiser Permanente Innovation, Elevance Health Innovation, and  PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Services. 

Joyce has a Master of Business Administration from the California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. She strongly believes in the power of creativity and entrepreneurship, which she promotes through graduate teaching at the California College of the Arts. She also served on the board of The Crucible, an industrial arts school in West Oakland. Currently, she serves as a founding advisory board member for COVEN, which focuses on activating spaces and places for monumental art. 

Joyce lives in San Francisco with her husband. They recently completed their first host experience within a cultural exchange program and are committed to hosting each year. In her free time, she enjoys adventuring in nature and collaborative public art projects with Five Ton Crane at Seaport Studios in Richmond.
