Job Description

ABOUT SFMADE

Launched in 2010, SFMade is a first-of-its-kind, non-profit economic development organization that has served as a national model focused on providing industry-specific guidance, education, and resources to the manufacturing sector. We’ve built strong relationships with manufacturers across diverse industries including CPG, apparel, and advanced manufacturing.
Our strengths include our unique youth programs like FlexFactor, our extensive network of advisors and service providers, and our ability to connect manufacturers with technical assistance. In partnership with the City of San Jose, SFMade launched MFG in 2018 to drive resources, knowledge, and visibility to the city’s more than 1,200 manufacturers.

By helping companies grow in place, we’re creating jobs for the local workforce while building pride in local manufacturing. As we expand our regional footprint across the Bay Area, we’re seeking passionate people who share our commitment to strengthening the local manufacturing ecosystem.

MAKING LOCAL MANUFACTURING THRIVE

From precision machining operations to semiconductor fabrication facilities, there are hundreds of manufacturers creating high-skilled jobs – right here in the Bay Area. These companies are driving innovation, utilizing cutting-edge technologies, and keeping specialized production local. Making us proud.

We need additional support in developing and maintaining strong relationships with manufacturers in San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas (and surrounding areas) to ensure they get the tailored support they need to succeed. Which is where you come in.

THE IMPACT YOU’LL MAKE

You’ll be the trusted advisor that local manufacturers turn to when facing challenges unique to their sector. Here are the kinds of questions you might help answer:

  • Space & Facilities – “Can you help us find a bigger factory that’s still affordable?”
  • Supply Chain Solutions – “Lead times are getting worse. Any advice on local alternatives?”
  • Production Efficiency – “Can we do better in meeting deadlines and managing workflow?”
  • Technical Workforce Development – “What training programs exist for advanced manufacturing skills?”
  • Regulatory Compliance – “How do we navigate evolving regulations while scaling production?”
  • Capital Equipment Financing – “What resources exist for funding new production technology acquisition?”

You’ve likely worked directly in a machine shop or advanced manufacturing environment, giving you firsthand insight into these specialized challenges. For highly technical questions, you’ll have access to our network of experts and volunteer advisors from across the advanced manufacturing ecosystem.

DAY TO DAY

Your typical work week will involve:

  • 40% – Direct advising: One-on-one meetings with manufacturers (both in-person at facilities and virtual), providing solutions and connecting them with resources
  • 25% – Documentation and administration: Using Salesforce to track interactions, measuring impact through surveys, and reporting outcomes for grant requirements
  • 20% – Relationship building: Developing partnerships with local organizations, expanding our advisor network, and connecting manufacturers to each other for potential collaborations
  • 15% – Events and programs: Organizing workshops, participating in industry events, supporting job fairs, and helping implement our youth and workforce initiatives

While we embrace remote work flexibility, you’ll regularly visit manufacturing facilities in the South Bay (mainly San Jose, Milpitas, and Santa Clara) and surrounding communities. This balance of virtual and in-person engagement ensures we maintain strong connections while maximizing efficiency.

YOU BRING

  • Manufacturing expertise: Firsthand experience working in or closely with manufacturing businesses
  • Technical knowledge: Understanding of modern manufacturing technologies, processes, and industry trends
  • Local knowledge: Strong familiarity with the manufacturing communities and ecosystem in San Jose and surrounding areas
  • Relationship builder: Natural ability to connect with diverse business owners and build trust across different manufacturing sectors
  • Problem solver: Practical approach to identifying challenges and finding creative solutions
  • Organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple relationships and projects while maintaining detailed documentation
  • Communication talent: Clear and effective communicator across various channels and audiences
  • Mission alignment: Passion for supporting local manufacturing and economic development

WE OFFER

  • Meaningful work supporting local businesses and job creation
  • Collaborative team environment with passionate colleagues
  • Competitive nonprofit compensation and benefits package
  • Professional development opportunities within the economic development sector
  • Flexible work arrangement balancing remote and field work

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Compensation for this position will depend on the breadth, relevance and depth of your experience. The range for this position is $75,000-$85,000/year.
  • SFMade covers 100% percent of your medical, dental and vision premiums.
  • We have an “unlimited” PTO policy.

SFMade is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
