About us

MMclay is a San Francisco based studio run by ceramic artist and designer, MaryMar Keenan. We produce handmade dinnerware and ceramic tabletop pieces for some of the best restaurants in the country, a growing number of interior designers, and tables all over the world.

 

The position

We are seeking a skilled production assistant/ studio potter who is skilled at throwing on the pottery wheel and capable of reproducing designs with precision and efficiency. Looking for someone who is passionate about having their hands in clay, knows quite a bit about ceramics, and has a solid understanding of the nuances of clay and the pottery making process.

 

What you’ll do:

  • Throwing the requested products with efficiency and proficiency
  • Wedging and reclaiming clay
  • Maintaining the structure, character and integrity of each piece
  • Achieve consistency across products
  • Throw each piece to the standard of the production sample
  • Be willing to challenge yourself to throw more efficiently to maximize quantity and quality of production
  • Maintain studio cleanliness
  • Assist with loading clay and materials weekly

 

Requirements

What you’ll need:

  • Experience working in a clay studio
  • A curious mind and a willingness to learn new things
  • Ability to create your own structure in a small studio space, while balancing multiple projects and deadlines
  • The ability to work in a VERY fast paced, collaborative, team-focused environment
  • A keen eye for the details: methodical and logical
  • Develop an understanding of the MMclay product lines, and the characteristics unique to each piece
  • Ability to take direction and receive feedback, and give constructive feedback in return
  • Proficient with Google Workspace (formally Google Suite)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work 30+ hours a week, possibly including weekends

 

Physical Requirements:

  • **This position is very physical and requires considerable amount of strength and energy**
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more
  • Extended periods of time on your feet and at the wheel
  • Comfortable with repetition.

Joyce Shulman – Board Development Committee
Principal at Sonder Collective

Joyce is an innovation strategist who is passionate about creating positive social change. She is a consultant at Sonder Collective, a social impact consultancy specializing in climate, humanitarian, and global health issues.

With 15 years of experience in various sectors, Joyce brings expertise in strategic planning, research, and developing solutions. Her work is fueled by her curiosity and commitment to making a difference. Before joining Sonder Collective, she worked at digital health startups, Kaiser Permanente Innovation, Elevance Health Innovation, and  PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Services. 

Joyce has a Master of Business Administration from the California College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. She strongly believes in the power of creativity and entrepreneurship, which she promotes through graduate teaching at the California College of the Arts. She also served on the board of The Crucible, an industrial arts school in West Oakland. Currently, she serves as a founding advisory board member for COVEN, which focuses on activating spaces and places for monumental art. 

Joyce lives in San Francisco with her husband. They recently completed their first host experience within a cultural exchange program and are committed to hosting each year. In her free time, she enjoys adventuring in nature and collaborative public art projects with Five Ton Crane at Seaport Studios in Richmond.
