What part will you play?

  • GAF Energy is seeking a System Performance Engineer, reporting to the Performance Engineering Manager as part of the research and development team working on new products to integrate solar energy generation into residential roofing systems
  • In this role, you will use your knowledge and experience to characterize and improve the performance and reliability of GAF Energy products and systems
  • In this role, you will set up monitoring systems for existing and future products, conduct data analysis, and report performance findings, collaborating cross-functionally as an advocate for performance and reliability improvements

 

What will you be doing?

  • Set up performance tests for new and existing products, both in-house and with external partners
  • Maintain and expand GAF Energy in-house performance-testing capabilities, (e.g.,data loggers, I–V tracers, power monitoring equipment, inverters, weather stations)
  • Build the required data infrastructure to log, monitor, and analyze data from test systems and from the existing fleet
  • Conduct data analysis on large data sets and time series to understand the behavior of GAF Energy products and systems
  • Monitor performance metrics across existing fleet and future products, defining new performance metrics as needed
  • Parse and quantify system losses (e.g., shade, soiling, degradation) to guide future design improvements
  • Improve on existing system-level energy-production models and develop new models as needed
  • Define and document performance requirements for future products and systems
  • Develop and implement performance test plans, procedures, and methods
  • Champion Design-for-Performance and lead initiatives for continuous product improvement
  • Develop subject matter expertise regarding high-risk and high-frequency under-performance, especially for methods of detection and analysis

 

What do we require from you?

  • BS (or equivalent degree) in quantitative field (Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.) with 5+ years of professional experience or MS (or equivalent degree) in quantitative field (Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.) with 2+ years of professional experience or PhD (or equivalent degree) in quantitative field (Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.)
  • Experience coding in Python (or at least one high-level coding language: Matlab, Java, C++, etc.), including functional programming, object-oriented programming, and standard data analysis packages (pandas, numpy, matplotlib, request)
  • Experience performing data analysis on times series and large data sets preferred
  • Hands-on experience with data logging and monitoring systems (e.g., Campbell Scientific Loggernet suite) preferred
  • Experience with photovoltaic-system simulation software (e.g., PVsyst, Aurora Solar) preferred
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of photovoltaic systems (e.g., decomposition models, optical stack simulation software, simulation of photovoltaic cells, cell-to-modules losses) preferred
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Creativity & problem solving skills, demonstrated ability to learn on the job and acquire new skills, and a can-do attitude

Compensation and benefits:

  • Full-time position with a $115,000 – $140,000 annual salary
