Admiral Maltings, located in Alameda, is California's first small-batch malting facility to open in decades. Malted grains are the primary ingredient in beer. Admiral partners with California farmers to source quality grain and produce exceptional, hand-crafted malt. Our malt not only helps brewers make great beer, but it also enables them to operate more sustainably and to deepen their connection with local agriculture.


At Admiral, we practice the traditional craft of floor-malting, which is more labor intensive than modern mechanical methods but creates a product with premium flavor and quality.


Working at Admiral is a great opportunity for those interested in entering the craft beer/spirits industry. For entry level positions, the work is tough, but does not require specific previous work experience and folks of many varied backgrounds can be successful. Employees receive on the job training for all necessary skills and we embrace continued education/professional development. In addition to the manual labor of making malt, there are opportunities to learn about malting and brewing science, warehouse/shipping operations, and equipment operation/maintenance. Opportunities arise frequently for workers who have gained familiarity with the malting process and demonstrated competency in basic production tasks to grow into advanced production positions with greater responsibility.

Job Duties

Malt Production I:

Job Description: The Malt Production I position is Admiral’s entry level Production role and is designed for employees with little or no direct malting experience. The position consists of primarily manual labor with regular opportunities for advanced training and education.

Job duties include: lots of shoveling malt, safely operating conveyors and other equipment, stacking 55# bags on pallets, performing laboratory analysis and cleaning/facility maintenance.

Job Requirements

An appreciation for hard work, attention to detail, positive team-minded attitude and enthusiasm for education are key to success in this position.

Candidates must be able to stand for the majority of an 8-hour shift, perform sustained physical activity for up to 3 hours and lift 55# bags.

Weekend availability

Skills/Experience Preferred

High school diploma or GED
Professional experience or personal interest in artisan food, craft beer/brewing, sustainable agriculture
Forklift experience/certification
Experience in other labor trades (Agriculture, construction, mechanical, landscaping, etc.)
Familiarity with computer programs such as MS Word, Google Sheets/Docs, Adobe Acrobat

Compensation

$16-19, DOE

8:00am- 4:30pm with occasional overtime. Weekends plus 3 weekdays.
