McLaren Engineering, the engineered products division of Linamar Corporation, is a company focused on the design, development and testing of advanced automotive driveline and powertrain systems.
Linamar Corporation recently acquired a conformable hydrogen pressure vessel technology from Volute Inc., and this technology is being developed in the new San Francisco office of McLaren Engineering.

Job Duties

We are developing a next-generation hydrogen pressure vessel that will accelerate the clean transportation revolution by making it cheaper and easier for automakers to develop hydrogen-powered cars. This role will be responsible for the design and analysis involved with integrating our conformable pressure vessel into vehicles. Particular emphasis will be on ensuring crashworthiness and optimal performance under all possible vehicle usage scenarios. Work will be done in collaboration with a small team of mechanical engineers and will interface directly with OEM customers.

• Analysis and design of conformable hydrogen pressure vessels; this includes the tank itself, as well as components that are required for
mounting, manufacturing, and testing the tank
• Perform structural CAE analysis under various loads including shock, vibration, and impact
• Conduct root cause analysis of failures that occur during testing
• Propose design changes for mitigating failure modes observed during CAE or testing
• Interface with OEM customers to determine optimal strategy for integrating tank in vehicle
• Mentor junior team members in CAE and design
• Occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing
• Plan for overall project and component design timing
• Comply with all applicable company policies and procedures (i.e. Quality System Procedures)
• Ensure compliance with all legislative requirements in the facility’s geographic location and:

- OHSAS 18001:2007 Health and Safety management system standard
- ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management system standard
- TS 16949 Technical Specification Management and Linamar Quality Basics system standards

- Maintain balance between customer, employee and financial satisfaction by maximizing facility/department Performance

- Support and maintain department lean initiatives as set out in LPS system requirements.

- Familiarity with McLaren’s Business Management System (BMS)

Job Requirements

• 3-10 years of relevant professional experience
• B.S. in mechanical/civil/aerospace engineering; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred
• Extensive experience with simulating mechanical components using commercial CAE codes, including explicit dynamic simulations, modal
analysis, and non-isotropic materials
• Proficient with mechanical design including 2D drawing, 3D CAD, GD&T, geometric and statistical stack-ups and manufacturing processes
• Comfort with hand calculations based on first-principles analysis
• Experience in some of the following areas:
• Automotive industry
• Composite materials
• High pressure equipment
• Pressure vessels
• Mass production

Skills/Experience Preferred

• Demonstrated ability to act as a technical leader on a small engineering team
• Enjoy a combination of computer-based, pen-and-paper, and hands-on work
• Thrive in a dynamic R&D environment and adapt smoothly to our evolving needs
