Johnson Leathers bears the name of its founder Johnson Tam. Originally trained as a tailor in Hong Kong, Tam moved to San Francisco in 1976 and started working for a local garment manufacturer where he learned the process of making leather jackets. In 1979 Tam founded Johnson Leather Corporation and operated out of a small storefront on Hyde Street in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
Over the past 40 years Johnson Leathers has manufactured jackets for many of the Bay Area police departments, the California Highway Patrol, as we well as for labels such as Beams, Comme Des Garcons, Western River, Nepenthes and many others.
We’re just a small group of folks that works hard to continue on the tradition that was started 40 years ago. All of the production work is done in our small shop in San Francisco; from cutting, to skiving, to sewing. We offer a large line of stock styles and also make fully customized items. If you’re ever in the Nob Hill neighborhood please stop by the shop and say hello.
