Company Spotlight:Tanko Lighting
Tanko Lighting

Jason Tanko always had a thing for street lights. “Ever since I was a kid I was obsessed with street lights, and I got the idea for my business in college,” he said. “I had seen how lights were just thrown away when they still had a lot of good utility in them— it’s essentially like throwing away a car because of a flat tire.” That idea has turned into a thriving business, helping cities and municipalities save tons of money- and stay safe- by retrofitting old street lights.  The Bayview-based company, soon to celebrate its 10-year anniversary, employs over 30 people, mostly from the neighborhood. For Tanko Lighting, affordability and sustainability are not mutually exclusive when it comes to outdoor lighting, and the company has moved into designing comprehensive packaged lighting solutions that increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and waste, while helping cities save on costs.Tanko Lighting is using SFMade’s Accelerator Program to access new markets and showcase their unique model. “We’re going to be working on how to use our San Francisco-ness to showcase proof of concept projects, and tap into new markets in our own backyard,” said Clare Bressani, Vice President. “Even in just the few weeks we’ve been in the Accelerator Program, we’ve been more dialed in to the resources we need.”

Vote Yes on E!
A proposal is on the November ballot to do away with Payroll Tax!So what does that mean for manufacturers? It means that any business with less than $1M in revenue will pay no tax, and larger manufacturers should see a reduction in tax obligations since they will pay on far lower percentages than other industries as a manufacturer under the new gross receipts system.
